Sintra Moorish Castle

Moorish Castle in Sintra is a fantastic place for hiking along the walls. Sightseeing views over Sintra valley and the Atlantic Coastline, visitors perceive this strategic point for observation and prevention. Founded under Islamic Rule of the Iberica Peninsula, it was found artifacts that gave the idea of the site and how the population lived in the area.

The Moorish Castle has structures carved into the rocks. We need to put our minds prior to the 12th century. In those days, silos were made inside and outside the castle fortification. What is the goal of these silos? To conserve and preserve certain foodstuffs, such as cereals among others.

Moorish Castle, Sintra

Moorish till the 12th century

D. Afonso Henriques (the first King of Portugal) following the conquest of Lisbon and Santarém took over the Moorish Castle since he recognized the importance of this area in terms of defense.

Strategically he delivered it to a Master in the Knights Templar ( Gualdim Pais) who receive a charter in 1154. Roman Catholic population started to settle in the region and Islam began to disappear. Of course, there were conflicts between Christians and Moors (the ones that stayed in the land), however, the castle was abandoned. During that time, the Medieval town included the Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim, which was built between the two rings of the walls.

Moorish Castle is included in Sintra Cultural Landscape as World Heritage.

After 1976, developed archaeological excavations produced very positive results, such as a diversity of artifacts and discoveries of walls or paths that become possible to know more about the importance of the Castle and the habits of many inhabitants (Moors and Christians) from the past.

In 1995, UNESCO classified the Sintra Cultural Landscape as World Heritage. Later in 2000, Parques de Sintra took over the management of this national monument and others. Over the years the preservation of history and the monument itself has been done, and it that became an amazing place to visit. Perfect for hiking lovers, it is possible to walk around the castle.
